Darren Hill over at Ten Pin Management (and a former Raindog) tells me that nine artists currently or formerly from Rhode Island - She Rides, Howl, Deer Tick, The Low Anthem, Sage Francis, B. Dolan, Prolyphic, Elvis Perkins In Dearland and Wheat - are playing at this year's South By Southwest Music Conference, the nation's biggest music and arts showcase and conference, to be held in Austin, Texas, next month (the music bit is March 18-22).

Hill himself will speak on a panel entitled "Music Managers' Strategic Stances" on March 15.

"I've been going to SXSW for a dozen years and this is the strongest RI representation I can recall," Hill says in an e-mail. "I think the quantity, quality, and diversity of the artists speaks for the health of the local music scene."
